Finding a home for Fred

This is a story of what advocacy is really about; it is a story about new ways of ‘thinking’ and ‘doing’. Fred’s advocate and others who knew him wanted truly to build a new life for him in his move from an institution where he had been living for 30 years. Instead of beginning the process by looking at resources and what accommodation could be bought with X amount of dollars etc., these people decided they would place Fred at the centre of the process – who he is, what he wants and needs. This ultimately meant that the moving process was about Fred rather than about houses and resources. Keywords: Individualis- ation, Accommodation. Searchword: Advocacy
