Culture and Disability in the Pacific: When Does a Difference Make a Difference?
Fitzgerald’s experiences in Micronesia and American and Western Samoa have confirmed her belief that perceptions about what constitutes a disability vary both within and across cultures; similarly, societal perceptions of and attitudes towards differences among individuals vary widely. This means that we must be wary of imposing models based on Western beliefs and attitudes on people from different backgrounds as they may be culturally inappropriate. Keyword: Cross cultural
